Coleman RoadTrip LXE Propane Grill

Gearflogger reviews the Coleman Roadtrip LXE propane grill

It's grilling season! OK, it's always grilling season, but summer is special because you can do it anywhere, provided you have a portable grill like the Coleman RoadTrip LXE.

The LXE was clearly designed by someone who wanted to bring a premium grilling experience on the road. The design is solid, transitioning from flat to ready-to-grill in seconds with minimal effort. The wheels make it easy to move, and the size is perfect for even small spaces; from car to canoe, no problemo.

But Coleman didn't just make a stripped down grill. The LXE includes thoughtfully engineered features like porcelain coated cast iron grates, dual slide-out trays, tool holders, dual burner controls and autolight. The 10,000btu burners will run for a couple hours off standard 16 ounce canisters, longer if you keep the heat lower. You can even buy an accessory to hook up a 20lb tank for home use, and there's no reason this can't be your primary grill.

So here are a few tips to make this perfect grill work perfectly: first, you probably never need to use the high heat setting, and definitely not if you're cooking with the lid down. The LXE gets plenty hot enough on medium (lid open) or medium-low (lid closed). I'm normally a "lookin' ain't cookin'" guy, but for burgers and dogs on this bad boy I have to admit I kind of like the open lid. Second, use a little oil or cooking spray on the grates and clean up will be a breeze. You can also line it with foil, but you don't have to because the drip tray is easy enough to clean out.

Overall the Coleman RoadTrip LXE is a fantastic propane grill, and here's the thing: it would be fantastic at twice the price it goes for! It really is that good, and that good a bargain to boot. Some colors are available at a substantial discount, so you have options. At the end of the day, you'll be eating high on the hog.
