If you’re looking for a workhorse of a crampon, look no farther. The Black Diamond Sabretooth can take whatever you dish out from alpine ice to mixed slag.
I use the step-in Pro version. The horizontal front points are great for all-around use, but the real selling point of the Sabretooth is their roomy toe bail that fits most overboots. Strange but true, most crampons seem to not be designed for that purpose.
It’s not the lightest crampon out there, but while I’m looking for the optimal blend of weight, reliability and performance this is what I use when I need to get sharp. Anti-balling plates available and recommended.
